Playwright’s Comments:
In the summer of 2019, I had just finished my freshman year of college and was living on my own for the first time. Though I was unsure in which direction my life would unfold, I knew that it would be guided by an innate hunger to create. Yet, I also understood that whatever I created must be guided by a larger intention. Whether inciting action, raising awareness, or encouraging individuals to recognize their own inner humanity, I hope that my work extends beyond itself. Consequently, I Thought I Was Safe was born. Inspired by the intersection of various personal passions (horror films, social justice, and theatre), I finished the play’s first 20-page draft at the end of July 2019. At the time, I did not imagine that it would grow to be produced by the oldest Asian American theatre group in the Pacific Northwest. However, I am very thankful for the journey my piece ultimately embarked on. Working with PFP, I’ve developed tremendously as an artist. In closing, I’d like to thank Dan Rector, Anna Ly, the PFP Producers, and everyone else who’s supported me while writing I Thought I Was Safe.
