Director’s Note

Vietgone, at the core, is a love letter the playwright wrote to his parents. Through their love story, Qui unfolds an intricate tapestry of determination, self identity, sacrifice, relationships, displacement, courage, loyalty, and love–undying, unconditional, parental/friendship/romantic love. He tells us that the identity of the Vietnamese people should not be reduced to the war and trauma from a long time ago and that old Asian folks with accents are vibrant people with profound personal histories who are articulate in their native tongue. And that immigrants are some of the most faithful Americans.

My hope is that you recognize this tapestry and relish Qui’s comedic genius. We have spectacular talents on and off stage, predominantly of Asian heritage, who came together to tell this story, which has been a gift and an absolute blast.

Thank you for being here. Enjoy the road trip.
